Attendance Allowance: Who Can Claim, How to Apply & How Much You Could Receive

If you or a loved one need extra support due to a long-term illness or disability, you may be eligible for Attendance Allowance, a government benefit designed to help with additional care costs.

Many people miss out on this financial support simply because they don’t realise they qualify. In this guide, we’ll break down who can claim, how to apply, and how much you could receive.

Who Can Claim Attendance Allowance?

Attendance Allowance is available for people who:

Are State Pension age or older.

Have a physical or mental disability that requires regular help or supervision.

Have needed this help for at least six months (unless they are terminally ill).

Do not already receive Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Disability Living Allowance (DLA).

You don’t need to have a carer to qualify, this allowance is for anyone who struggles with daily tasks due to their condition, whether it’s mobility issues, personal care, or supervision for safety reasons.

How Much Could You Receive?

Attendance Allowance is paid at two different rates, depending on how much help you need:

Lower rate (£72.65 per week) – If you need help either during the day or night.

Higher rate (£108.55 per week) – If you need help both during the day and night or have a terminal illness.

This money isn’t means-tested, so your savings or income won’t affect how much you receive. It’s tax-free and can be spent however you need—whether on home adaptations, transport, or extra care.

How to Apply for Attendance Allowance

Applying is easier than you might think. Here’s how to get started:
